Indonesia orders SPPG to buy surplus eggs as market prices tumble

The Indonesian government has directed Satuan Pelayanan Pemenuhan Gizi (SPPG) in affected regions to purchase eggs from producers after wholesale prices fell sharply, especially in Blitar, East Java. Trade Minister Budi Santoso said the move, coordinated with the National Nutrition Agency, aims to ease pressure on farmers, absorb excess supply and keep the market balanced. The policy also opens the possibility of using the collected eggs in food‑assistance programs.

National price monitoring by the Strategic Food Price Information Center (PIHPS) shows chicken eggs trading at about 30,400 rupiah per kilogram, alongside other staple prices. The price data underscores the recent downward trend that prompted the SPPG intervention.

Officials will continue to monitor regional price gaps and adjust procurement to support the egg, fish and chicken meat sectors, seeking to stabilise supplies and protect agricultural incomes.
