Indonesia Parliament Approves Police Law Changes Giving President Power to Extend Retirement of Senior Officers

The Commission III of the Indonesian House of Representatives and the government reached an agreement to amend the Police Law (RUU Polri). The amendment lets the president extend the retirement age of four‑star police generals beyond the standard limit of 60 years, for up to one year or as needed, and sets retirement ages of 59 for enlisted personnel and 60 for officers, with special‑expertise staff eligible for extensions of up to two years.

In the same session, Commission III chairman Habiburokhman praised Kapolri Listyo Sigit Prabowo as one of the best police chiefs in the nation's history. He highlighted the extensive consultation process for the RUU Polri, which included 12 public hearings, university visits across 12 provinces, and the review of 112 draft items grouped into eight key focus areas such as transparency, professionalism, human‑rights‑based education, and the governance of police personnel.
