Indonesia Plans to Classify Ride‑Hailing Drivers as Micro‑Enterprises
The Indonesian government is drafting a presidential regulation to classify online motorcycle‑taxi (ojek) drivers as micro‑entrepreneurs, aiming to safeguard their income, labour rights and long‑term career security. State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi said the measure is part of a broader effort to protect the app‑based transport ecosystem, while MSME Minister Maman Abdurrahman confirmed the draft will treat drivers as micro, small and medium enterprises.
Ride‑hailing firms GoTo Gojek Tokopedia and Grab welcomed the proposal, pledging cooperation with ministries. The regulation would allocate responsibilities among the Transport, Communication & Digital, and MSME ministries and maintains a 92 % driver‑to‑8 % platform commission split introduced earlier in 2026. The draft remains under discussion, with officials seeking consensus before finalisation.
