Indonesia Passes Police Law Allowing Disabled Persons to Join Force and Sets Varied Retirement Ages

Indonesia's House of Representatives approved the revised Police Law (RUU Polri) on 9 June 2026. The legislation amends the 2002 Police Act to permit Indonesian citizens with disabilities to become police officers, provided they meet the same competence and eligibility criteria as other candidates. Article 21, paragraph 2 explicitly states that "citizens with disabilities may be appointed as members of the National Police as long as they have the required competence."

The same law also establishes different retirement ages for police personnel: enlisted ranks and non‑commissioned officers will retire at 59, while all officer grades retire at 60. The government explained that a uniform retirement age would demotivate lower‑rank members and create disparities in career length. Additionally, the law confirms that active police officers may be assigned to civilian ministries, such as agriculture or nutrition, in accordance with Article 30, paragraph 4 of the 1945 Constitution.
