Indonesia Power Outages Prompt Consumer Compensation Delay by PLN
A widespread electricity outage struck Sumatra from 22‑24 May 2026 after a transmission line broke, and rotating outages affected parts of Java when two independent power‑producer plants experienced technical failures. The Ministry of Trade (Kemendag) intervened, urging the state‑owned utility PLN to provide clear information on the cause, recovery steps and consumer rights. Director General of Consumer Protection Moga Simatupang emphasized that businesses must give accurate, honest details and address complaints responsibly. Consumer‑empowerment director Immanuel Tarigan Sibero highlighted the ministry’s coordination with PLN and the availability of complaint channels via WhatsApp, email and telephone.
PLN set up a 24‑hour central command post, deployed generators to hospitals and government offices, and pledged regular updates through online media. Compensation for affected households remains pending the final results of the police (Bareskrim Polri) investigation; possible remedies include bill reductions or prepaid electricity tokens as outlined in the energy ministry’s service quality regulations.
