Indonesia prepares for prolonged drought through budget increases and rainwater harvesting

Authorities in Indonesia are intensifying preparations to combat prolonged drought conditions. In Gresik, the local government is allocating an additional 104 million Rupiah through the 2026 budget revision to mitigate water crises. Bupati Fandi Akhmad Yani stated that interventions will target both clean water needs for residents and the agricultural sector. Planned measures include operating pumps, utilizing springs, drilling wells, and installing piping networks to distribute water to affected areas.

In the Yogyakarta region, experts are urging communities to prepare for a drought that could last until May 2027, with a peak expected between October and November. Dr. Agus Maryono from Universitas Gadjah Mada is advocating for the revitalization of rainwater harvesting cultures. He recommends the use of village ponds (embung) and household reservoirs to replenish groundwater and secure water supplies, noting that climate change necessitates more serious anticipation of water scarcity.
