Indonesia probes death of doctor intern in Jakarta apartment

Dr Siti Zahra Maghfira, a medical intern in the Indonesian Doctor Internship Program, was found dead after falling from the 18th floor of the Kalibata City apartment complex in South Jakarta on 26 July 2026. The incident sparked public concern over a series of doctor deaths reported in 2026 and led Commission IX of the Indonesian House of Representatives to call for mandatory mental‑health screening for all physicians. Commission member Irma Suryani Chaniago urged the Ministry of Health to strengthen internship regulations under the 2024 Health Law.

The Ministry of Health’s Inspectorate released the results of its investigation, examining five aspects: work hours, workload, sick‑leave policies, work environment, and the doctor’s health condition. It found that the intern’s weekly work hours did not exceed the 40‑hour limit and that there was no excessive workload. She had been granted sick leave when ill, and colleagues described the hospital environment as supportive, even providing meals during duty. The sole area of concern identified was the intern’s mental‑health condition, which the ministry says contributed to the tragedy. Authorities plan to develop stronger oversight and legal protections for medical trainees.
