Indonesia doctor internship deaths

Entities: Dr. Siti Zahra Maghfira · Program Internship Doctor Indonesia (PIDI) · Universitas Hasanuddin · Budi Gunadi Sadikin · Dr. Yuli Farianti

Overview

In late July 2026 Indonesia’s Ministry of Health confirmed the death of Dr. Muhammad Zulfikar Drakel, an intern at a Lampung hospital, concluding that his fatality was not linked to bullying or excessive work hours and that his shift complied with the 40‑hour weekly limit. Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin announced immediate mental‑health screening for all participants in the Doctor Internship Program and Specialist Training.

Two days later Dr. Siti Zahra Maghfira, a recent graduate interning in West Java, was found dead after an apparent fall from an 18th‑floor apartment in South Jakarta. Police investigations remain open, and the Program Internship Doctor Indonesia (PIDI) and its dental counterpart (PIDGI) again expressed condolences and called for better protection of health‑care workers.

The Ministry’s Inspectorate later reported that the intern’s work hours and environment met legal standards, but noted her mental‑health condition as a contributing factor. In response, Commission IX of the House of Representatives urged mandatory mental‑health screening for all physicians and asked the Ministry to tighten internship regulations under the 2024 Health Law. Authorities plan to develop stronger oversight and legal protections for medical trainees to prevent further tragedies.
