Jayawijaya shooting injures two civilians near Baliem Valley Cultural Festival
A shooting incident occurred near the entrance of the 2026 Baliem Valley Cultural Festival in Walesi, Jayawijaya, Papua Pegunungan, on Saturday, August 8, 2026. The attack injured two civilians, Laode Muhammad Kojo (43) and Salbiah (50), both of whom were treated at RSUD Wamena and reported to be in stable and conscious condition.
Authorities, including the TNI and Polri, suspect the perpetrators are members of the KKB (Armed Criminal Group) from Kodap III Ndugama, potentially led by Egianus Kogoya. The shooting is believed to be an attempt to disrupt security during the cultural event. Following the incident, the festival was temporarily suspended to allow security forces to secure the area and conduct a manhunt.
Joint security forces have also evacuated foreign tourists to the Jayawijaya Regent's Office under tight protection. Police have conducted a crime scene investigation, recovering ballistic evidence including shell casings and projectiles from a vehicle involved in the incident.
