Jayawijaya cultural festival shooting

Overview

On August 8, 2026, a shooting incident occurred near the entrance of the Baliem Valley Cultural Festival in Walesi, Jayawijaya, Papua Pegunungan. Two civilians, Laode Muhammad Kojo (43) and Salbiah (50), were injured when their Mitsubishi Triton, which was delivering supplies to the festival site, was targeted. The vehicle sustained multiple bullet holes in the hood and the driver's door.

The victims were treated at RSUD Wamena, where they were reported to be in stable and conscious condition. Investigators recovered eight 5.56mm shell casings and several projectile fragments at the scene.

Security forces, including the TNI and Polri, identified the suspected perpetrators as members of the Kodap III Ndugama group, a component of the West Papua National Liberation Army (TPNPB-OPM), potentially led by Egianus Kogoya. Preliminary investigations suggest the attack may have been an attempt to disrupt the festival following an increased military security presence in the region. In response, the festival was temporarily suspended to allow for crime scene investigations and a manhunt, while foreign tourists were evacuated under protection. Despite the incident, local government officials expressed a commitment to continuing the festival to preserve regional cultural heritage and tourism.
