Indonesia proposes standardized Hajj medical check-up rates

The Indonesian Ministry of Health is proposing standardized medical check-up (MCU) rates for prospective Hajj pilgrims to address significant cost disparities between regional and vertical hospitals. Deputy Health Minister Dante Saksono Harbuwono stated that current price variations are excessive, noting that some examinations have reached as high as Rp5,000,000, which he described as unreasonable.

The proposal includes two primary pricing options for basic health examinations: a lower range of Rp800,000 to Rp1,000,000 and a higher range of Rp1,100,000 to Rp1,300,000. Additionally, the Ministry recommends a price range of Rp320,000 to Rp350,000 for mandatory meningitis vaccinations, with combined packages available for up to Rp850,000. These base rates do not include additional medical tests such as CT scans, tuberculosis screenings, or echocardiograms, which may be required based on individual medical needs.

Standardizing these health assessments is intended to improve the evaluation of pilgrims' health readiness (istithaah). The Ministry noted that stricter health criteria have already shown positive results, with Indonesian Hajj pilgrim deaths in Saudi Arabia decreasing from 450 in 2025 to 340 in 2026.
