Indonesia forest fire update: 431 hectares extinguished as Japan ends mission

Indonesia's National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) reports that forest and land fire (karhutla) coverage in six priority provinces has decreased, with 431.53 hectares successfully extinguished out of a total burned area of 527.6 hectares. As of September 28, 2026, 96.07 hectares remain unextinguished. Ground operations accounted for 369.03 hectares of the extinguished area, while aerial operations handled 62.5 hectares.

Japan has officially concluded its humanitarian mission in Kalimantan. The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) deployed three CH-47 Chinook helicopters, which conducted 40 aerial water-bombing operations and dropped over 220 tons of water. In recognition of their service, Indonesian Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin awarded the Satyalancana Dharma Samudera honor to 361 Japan Disaster Relief personnel during a ceremony at Kijing International Port.

While the national number of high-confidence hotspots has dropped significantly, authorities remain vigilant. Hotspot activity has seen increases in South Sumatra and Jambi, while provinces like Central Kalimantan and West Kalimantan have seen substantial decreases. The Ministry of Forestry noted that Riau has also seen a reduction in its hotspot ranking.
