Indonesia pushes 100 GW solar program to accelerate renewable energy transition

The Institute for Essential Services Reform (IESR) says solar power plants (PLTS) are the cheapest and quickest renewable energy option because they can be built with community participation. IESR chief executive Fabby Tumiwa highlighted the government's 100 GW solar program, announced by President Prabowo Subianto, as a key driver for Indonesia's renewable‑energy transition. Indonesia’s total renewable‑energy potential is estimated at 3,600 GW, with solar accounting for about 3,200 GW. Tumiwa noted that solar projects can be deployed from household to industrial scale, unlike geothermal or hydro which require lengthy exploration and water‑flow assessments. The president framed the initiative as a way to achieve energy self‑sufficiency and cut carbon emissions, aiming to complete the 100 GW capacity within two years.
