Indonesia pushes ahead with People's School construction across regions
The Indonesian government is accelerating the build‑out of the "Sekolah Rakyat" (People's School) network to expand quality education for children from the poorest families. By July 2026 the Sragen project in Central Java is expected to be operational, with physical progress at about 84 % and a total cost of Rp222 billion, part of a national budget of Rp1.3 trillion for 93 sites. Minister of Public Works Dody Hanggodo reported that the Aceh 2 school in Subulussalam has reached roughly 60 % completion despite logistical challenges at the border location, and that concrete is being used instead of steel to speed construction.
The program, championed by President Prabowo Subianto, targets families in the lowest income deciles, providing fully equipped campuses with classrooms from elementary to high school, dormitories, teachers' housing, and community facilities. Officials say the schools aim to improve academic outcomes, health and discipline, and to contribute to the country's "Golden Indonesia 2045" vision.
