Indonesia expands Sekolah Rakyat and school reforms
Overview
The Sekolah Rakyat (People’s School) initiative has entered a major implementation phase. By June 2026, construction of 93 phase-II sites reached approximately 78% completion, with Minister of Public Works Dody Hanggodo targeting a June finish despite logistical hurdles in regions like Aceh. To staff these schools, the Ministry of Social Affairs launched a large-scale recruitment drive for over 8,000 teachers and support staff via the PPPK contract system. President Prabowo Subianto has personally championed the program, ordering expansions in Bali and emphasizing its role in serving the poorest families (deciles 1–2).
To support these students, the government announced housing renovation aid for 10,000 Sekolah Rakyat families. The program has shown early success in areas like Lombok Barat, where students reported increased confidence. However, challenges remain; in Cirebon, local authorities had to appoint temporary teachers while awaiting central government assignments.
Parallel to Sekolah Rakyat, the government is addressing broader systemic issues. The School Revitalisation Programme has expanded its target to 71,744 schools, and the National Integrated School (SNT) program launched its first cohort of 1,360 students in July 2026, with a long-term goal of 500 SNTs by 2029.
Despite these expansions, enrollment in many public elementary schools continues to drop sharply in regions like Pacitan, Semarang, and Ciamis, prompting calls for better teacher welfare and higher per-student funding. Additionally, the Ministry of Education introduced new guidelines to regulate electronic device use in classrooms to prevent digital addiction and ensure responsible technology use.
