Indonesia Pushes AI Governance to Boost Creative Economy

Indonesia’s Ministry of Creative Economy (Kemenekraf) announced that artificial intelligence (AI) will be leveraged as a major growth driver for the country's creative sectors. Minister Teuku Riefky Harsya said the government is working to strengthen human‑resource capacities and establish balanced AI governance that safeguards creators while encouraging innovation. The ministry outlined steps such as AI literacy programs, an AI usage guide for the creative industry, the creation of an AI sandbox for testing, and pending legislation including a draft copyright law, a presidential decree on a national AI roadmap, and a decree on AI ethics.

Industry voices, including Microsoft Indonesia’s AI Skills Director Arief Suseno, welcomed the move, noting that countries like China, the EU and the United States have already integrated AI regulations into their copyright systems. Stakeholders highlighted challenges such as defining human contribution in AI‑generated works, ensuring content transparency, and protecting digital personas from misuse. The ministry aims to craft context‑specific policies that support Indonesia’s creative economy without compromising creators’ rights.
