Indonesia reports first decline in tuberculosis incidence
Indonesia's Minister of Health, Budi Gunadi Sadikin, announced that tuberculosis (TB) incidence in the country is estimated to decline during the 2024–2026 period. This marks the first time Indonesia has recorded a decrease in TB incidence.
The decline is attributed to aggressive screening and increased case detection. Case findings rose from 440,000 in 2022 to 856,000 recently. By increasing the number of identified cases, the government aims to ensure patients receive immediate treatment, thereby reducing the risk of community transmission.
For 2026, Indonesia expects approximately 1,080,000 TB cases. To date, 666,000 cases have been discovered, with 599,000 patients—roughly 90 percent of those found—currently undergoing treatment. The Ministry of Health has set targets to find 90 percent of all TB cases, identify 95 percent of those for treatment, and ensure 90 percent of patients complete their treatment regimens.
