Indonesia tuberculosis management and detection

Overview

Indonesia’s Ministry of Health reported an estimated decline in tuberculosis (TB) incidence for the 2024–2026 period, marking the first recorded decrease of this kind in the country. Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin attributed this trend to aggressive screening and increased case detection, noting that case findings rose from 440,000 in 2022 to 856,000 recently. The government aims to identify 90 percent of all cases and ensure 90 percent of patients complete their treatment.

At the local level, health authorities in Banjarbaru and Batu are intensifying detection efforts. In Banjarbaru, officials have called for strengthened early detection following a surge in acute respiratory infections and diarrhea, which have been exacerbated by smoke from forest and land fires. In Batu, the Health Office reported 589 TB cases, with the highest concentrations found in densely populated urban areas such as Sisir and Temas villages. Local officials are prioritizing contact tracing and early screening to manage asymptomatic carriers and prevent drug resistance.
