Indonesia reports rising staple food prices

The National Strategic Food Price Information Center (PIHPS) released the latest wholesale‑retail prices for key commodities across Indonesia. Chili bird’s eye (red) was priced at 73,000 IDR per kilogram, chicken eggs at 29,550 IDR/kg, onions at 51,850 IDR/kg, garlic at 43,150 IDR/kg, and rice of various grades ranged from 14,200 to 17,000 IDR per kilogram. Other items such as fresh chicken, beef, sugar and cooking oil were also listed at higher levels.

In Pacitan’s Minulyo market, local vendors reported similar pressure on staple foods. Rice rose from 13,000 to 14,000 IDR/kg, while garlic surged by 9,000 IDR/kg to 34,000 IDR/kg; onion prices fell to 38,000 IDR/kg. Traders said the price hikes are cutting consumer purchasing power, leading buyers to purchase smaller quantities and reducing shop turnover. “Pembeli sekarang lebih sepi. Kalau biasanya beli satu kilogram, sekarang ada yang hanya membeli setengah kilogram atau seperempat kilogram,” one seller said.
