Indonesia reports widespread failure in fortified rice quality standards

During a hearing with Commission IV of the House of Representatives, the Head of the National Food Agency and Minister of Agriculture, Amran Sulaiman, revealed significant issues regarding fortified rice standards in Indonesia.

Laboratory tests conducted across four facilities showed that over 90 percent of fortified rice samples failed to meet required standards. Specifically, 27 out of 28 brands inspected were classified as ‘Tidak Memenuhi Syarat’ (TMS) or ‘Not Meeting Requirements.’ Fortified rice is intended to provide essential micronutrients like vitamins and minerals through food technology.

In addition to quality concerns, reports indicate price manipulation by food syndicates. The National Food Agency noted that substandard fortified rice reached average market prices of approximately Rp 23,385 per kg, highlighting failures in regulating the rice trade and protecting the nearly 290 million people who rely on rice as a staple food.
