Sumenep Deploys 20 Ambulances After KM Mutiara Sentosa II Fire Leaves Five Dead
The government of Sumenep Regency mobilised 20 ambulances to the Kalianget Port in response to a fire aboard the passenger‑vehicle ferry KM Mutiara Sentosa II. The vessel caught fire while sailing from Surabaya to Makassar in the waters of Sumenep on the morning of 2 August 2026. According to the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), 232 people were evacuated, of whom 227 survived and five were confirmed dead.
Regent Achmad Fauzi Wongso said the ambulance deployment was a preparedness measure to provide immediate medical care to any passengers brought to Sumenep. The rescue operation involved the SAR ship KN SAR 249 Permadi, a RIB from the Sumenep port, the warship KRI Nala 363 and several commercial vessels. President‑level politician AHY expressed condolences and pledged an investigation into the incident.
