Indonesia maritime incidents and missing persons

Late July reports confirmed the deaths of several individuals previously reported missing in remote Indonesian regions. The body of 40‑year‑old diver Yohanis Malirafin was recovered on the Tanimbar Islands, 150 m from his last known location. In Rejang Lebong, 57‑year‑old Odi was found dead in a 7‑m‑deep ravine near his home, and a 62‑year‑old coffee farmer, Wagimini, was discovered with stab wounds, prompting a homicide investigation. Authorities also retrieved the bodies of 42‑year‑old fisherman Muhammad Amin near Sungai Pauh in Langsa and Yanto Idorway at the Memti Waterfall River in Pegunungan Arfak. Search operations continue for fisherman Suhardin, missing since 25 June. The SAR effort for the capsized ferry KM Nurul Salsa was concluded on 28 July, with 58 survivors rescued, four confirmed deaths and 14 passengers still missing.

In early August, two new drowning incidents were recorded. On 2 August, a selfie attempt at Pantai Semeti in Lombok Tengah resulted in the death of local woman Sabila and injuries to three tourists. The same day, three people drowned on the Ogan River in Ogan Ilir, Sumatra; 18‑year‑old Ari Febriansyah was recovered, while Rahman Udin and Rizky Saputra remain missing.

Later on 2 August, a fire broke out aboard the passenger‑vehicle ferry KM Mutiara Sentosa II while sailing from Surabaya to Makassar in Sumenep waters. Basarnas reported that 232 people were evacuated, 227 survived and five were confirmed dead. The Sumenep Regency deployed 20 ambulances to the port, and SAR assets including the ship KN SAR 249 Permadi and a warship assisted in the response. President‑level politician AHY pledged an investigation into the incident.
