Indonesia’s flagship Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) programme is facing intense scrutiny following widespread food poisoning incidents. Recent outbreaks reported between September 2 and 4 involved approximately 1,950 students, teachers, and Islamic boarding school pupils across East Java, Central Java, West Sumatra, Aceh, and South Sulawesi. Notable incidents include 752 students and 25 teachers in Rembang, Central Java, and 730 people in Sidoarjo, East Java. Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs Zulkifli Hasan acknowledged the program has faced failures due to these recurring issues but noted it cannot be halted as it is a constitutional mandate. Meanwhile, the National Nutrition Agency (BGN) has temporarily suspended the programme in several West Java schools to protect students from volcanic ash risks following activity from Mount Anak Krakatau.

Authorities are considering criminal charges for negligence. The Regent of Malang, HM. Sanusi, has warned kitchen managers of potential prosecution, and the BGN head has stated that criminal liability may apply if intentional negligence is identified.
