Indonesia secures $600 million BrahMos supersonic missile deal with India

During Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s state visit, Indonesia and India signed an agreement for Jakarta to acquire India’s BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles. Valued at roughly $600 million, the contract makes Indonesia the third country and the first in Southeast Asia to purchase the system.

The missile deal is part of a broader defence package that also includes the ASTRA beyond‑visual‑range air‑to‑air missile, intended for Indonesia’s Russian‑built Su‑27SK and Su‑30MK fighters and naval platforms. By adding the Mach‑3, 300‑kilogram warhead missile – whose export version has a range of about 290 km – Jakarta aims to diversify its armaments away from exclusive Russian dependence and to strengthen deterrence over the strategic Malacca Strait. Presidents Prabowo Subianto and Narendra Modi called the agreement a historic milestone between two of the world’s largest democracies.
