Indonesia seeks Russian partners for major rail corridor projects

Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY) announced that Indonesia will invite Russian companies to take part in the development of strategic railway corridors across the archipelago, including Trans‑Sumatra, Trans‑Kalimantan and Trans‑Sulawesi. The cooperation could cover construction, technology development, high‑speed and heavy‑haul engineering, safety and operational standards, low‑carbon rail solutions, manufacturing of rail equipment and training of human resources.

The offer was discussed during a meeting with Russian Transport Minister Andrey Nikitin in Moscow and later at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, where broader maritime, port and logistics collaboration was also proposed. Indonesia aims to boost national connectivity for its 17,380 islands and 280 million people, citing Russia’s experience with systems such as the Moscow Metro as a valuable reference.
