Indonesia seeks to boost industrial competitiveness through sustainability and global cooperation

Indonesian officials are emphasizing the need for increased value addition and sustainability to bolster national industrial competitiveness. Trade Minister Budi Santoso has called for the palm oil industry to prioritize traceability, international standards, and market diversification to navigate tightening global competition. He noted that modern buyers increasingly focus on sustainability, food safety, and supply chain reliability rather than just price.

To support these goals, the government is utilizing international trade agreements, with 25 currently implemented and several others in negotiation or ratification. Efforts are also being directed toward accelerating cooperation with the European Union and the United States.

Simultaneously, Masni Eriza of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs highlighted that Indonesia should leverage its involvement with BRICS and its accession process to the OECD to drive domestic industry. While the OECD provides a platform for improving governance, standards, and investment climates, officials stressed that regulatory alignment must not compromise national interests or reduce the competitiveness of local businesses.
