Indonesia palm oil industry strategic development

Projections indicate that palm oil could meet approximately 60 percent of the global demand for vegetable oils by 2050, driven by population growth, rising incomes, and industrialization. Total global requirements for vegetable oils are expected to reach 300 million tons by 2050, with applications extending to biomaterials, petrochemical substitution, and alternative energy.

In response to these trends, Indonesian officials are focusing on enhancing industrial competitiveness through sustainability and value addition. Trade Minister Budi Santoso has urged the palm oil industry to prioritize traceability, international standards, and market diversification to meet the demands of modern buyers who prioritize food safety and supply chain reliability.

To support these objectives, Indonesia is utilizing various international trade agreements and seeking cooperation with the European Union and the United States. Additionally, officials are looking to leverage Indonesia’s involvement with BRICS and its accession process to the OECD to improve governance and investment climates, while ensuring regulatory alignment does not compromise national interests or local business competitiveness.
