Indonesia sees sharp chicken price rise in Kediri as food costs surge

In Kediri, Indonesia, the average price of chicken at Pasar Pahing jumped to 34,000 rupiah per kilogram, up from about 24,000 rupiah two weeks earlier. Trader Nur Rokhim linked the increase to higher demand as schools reopened and to the restart of the free nutritious meal program (Program Makan Bergizi Gratis, MBG), though officials have not confirmed the cause.

Nationally, Indonesia’s food commodity prices are also climbing. The latest figures from the Strategic Food Price Information Center show red chilies at 54,350 rupiah per kilogram, garlic at 42,250, and rice ranging from 14,800 to 17,700 depending on quality. Beef, sugar, and cooking oil prices have risen as well. Inflation for June 2026 was recorded at 3.34%, driven largely by volatile fuel and food costs. Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa expects price pressures to ease in coming months as global oil prices decline, which could lower domestic fuel costs and help stabilize food prices.
