Indonesia sees sharp rise in onion and garlic prices as fuel costs climb

National food‑price data for mid‑June 2026 show Indonesia’s essential vegetables under pressure. Medium‑size garlic jumped 7.14% to Rp43,500 per kilogram, while red onion rose to Rp55,450 per kilogram, its highest level in recent months. The surge follows recent increases in fuel prices, which market analysts say raise transport costs for fresh produce.

Other commodity trends were mixed. Premium rice prices fell, whereas lower‑grade rice rose modestly. Green and red bird’s‑eye chilies continued to climb, reaching up to Rp79,000 per kilogram for red varieties. Cooking oil, sugar, beef, chicken and eggs showed only slight movements. Authorities warned that the full impact of higher fuel costs on food inflation could emerge in the coming weeks and stressed the need for monitoring distribution and market operations to protect consumer purchasing power.
