Indonesia sees sharp rise in staple food prices in July 2026

Indonesia’s food market experienced notable price increases in mid‑July 2026. According to the Bank Indonesia’s Pusat Informasi Harga Pangan Strategis Nasional (PIHPS), onion prices rose 8.9% to Rp 50,700 per kg, garlic 5.1% to Rp 46,200 per kg, and beef prices climbed to around Rp 151,000 per kg. Rice of various grades also saw double‑digit hikes, with the lowest‑quality varieties exceeding Rp 16,200 per kg. Chicken, sugar, and chili varieties followed similar upward trends.

The surge contributed to a 3.34% year‑on‑year inflation rate in June 2026, while core inflation remained steadier at 2.76%. Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati (quoted as Purbaya) attributed the pressure to fluctuating fuel and commodity costs, stating, “Tapi sama ada cabai, dan lain‑lain gitu kan… saya harapkan… harga minyak dunia turun, tekanan ke inflasi akan segera berkurang.” The government expects the temporary spikes to ease as global oil prices decline and fuel subsidies adjust.
