Indonesia market stabilizes amid MSCI reclassification concerns

The Indonesian stock market has shown signs of recovery following a significant selloff triggered by MSCI's proposal to reclassify Indonesia from an 'emerging market' to a 'standalone market'. The Jakarta Composite Index (IHSG) recently saw a rebound, gaining over 5% in a single session after previously dropping sharply.

To restore investor confidence and address MSCI's concerns regarding ownership transparency, the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) announced it will exclude stocks with high shareholding concentration (HSC) from its benchmark index calculation. Additionally, the IDX has adjusted the Auto Rejection Bawah (ARB) for stocks priced between Rp11 and Rp14 to Rp1 to moderate sharp price declines.

The National Economic Council (DEN) has recommended that President Prabowo Subianto continue market reforms and regulatory enforcement to mitigate the impact of potential passive fund outflows. Foreign investors have already withdrawn nearly US$5 billion from Indonesian equities this year, and analysts warn that an MSCI downgrade could trigger further outflows.
