National Nutrition Agency refines Indonesia's Free Nutritious Meal program
The National Nutrition Agency (BGN) is undergoing significant administrative and operational adjustments to its Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) program. Head of BGN Sudaryono announced that approximately 80 elite private schools and various boarding schools have been excluded from the program to ensure more effective budget allocation. Additionally, the agency is addressing data inaccuracies, noting that around 6 million beneficiaries require data correction due to duplicate entries.
Financially, the BGN is coordinating with the Ministry of Finance to manage the program's substantial budget, which is projected to reach Rp240 trillion for 2027. As part of an audit, Rp311 billion has been returned to the state treasury from 414 kitchens that were allocated funds but remained non-operational. To expand reach, the BGN aims to activate nutrition service kitchens in underdeveloped, frontier, and outermost (3T) regions starting in September.
Food safety concerns have also emerged following reports in North Lampung where an air rifle pellet was allegedly found in a student's meal. In response, the local nutrition service kitchen has been suspended pending investigation. To mitigate future risks, the BGN is collaborating with the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) to develop a food spoilage scanner, though the technology is still in the prototype stage.
