Indonesia strengthens migrant worker protections amid recruitment investigations

Indonesian authorities are intensifying efforts to protect migrant workers through both systemic policy improvements and active investigations into illegal recruitment. At a national consolidation event in Gresik, East Java, the Ministry of Migrant Worker Protection emphasized that protection must begin at the village level. Director General Muh. Fachri stated that villages should serve as the ‘first door of protection,’ providing information and ensuring safe migration paths. The government is currently utilizing the ‘Desa Migran Emas’ (Golden Migrant Village) model, which has been established in 756 villages across 27 provinces.

In a separate development, the Central Sulawesi Migrant Worker Protection Service (BP3MI) is investigating a potential human trafficking case involving residents from Parigi Moutong. A prospective worker, lured by a job offer in Dubai, was reportedly taken to Jakarta by individuals claiming to be company representatives, only to be held in a boarding house without clear information regarding departure. BP3MI is currently coordinating with local labor offices and authorities in Jakarta to identify the recruiters and determine if the incident involves official companies or illegal actors.
