Indonesian migrant worker protection and market expansion
Overview
The Indonesian government is pursuing a dual strategy of expanding international labor markets and strengthening domestic protections for migrant workers.
To increase employment opportunities, the Ministry of Migrant Worker Protection (KP2MI) is coordinating with diplomatic representatives to explore labor market expansion into the United States. This follows trends where Taiwan remains a primary destination, accounting for approximately 32 percent of total placements in the first half of 2026.
Simultaneously, authorities are increasing oversight of recruitment processes. KP2MI suspended PT Duta Fadalima in Jakarta for placing workers in the Middle East without proper permits. On a systemic level, the government is promoting the ‘Desa Migran Emas’ (Golden Migrant Village) model across 756 villages to establish local protection networks. Law enforcement and protection services are also investigating potential human trafficking, including a case in Central Sulawesi where a prospective worker was reportedly lured by fraudulent job offers for Dubai.
