Indonesia strengthens national police oversight with revised police law

Indonesia’s Parliament has approved a third amendment to Law No. 2 of 2002 on the National Police, incorporating extensive reforms aimed at professionalising and cleaning the force. The revision bolsters the National Police Commission (Kompolnas), granting it broader civil‑oversight powers over police performance, recruitment and promotion, and sets a four‑year mandate for its members, renewable once.

Senior political analyst Boni Hargens told reporters that “integrating the strengthening of Kompolnas into the existing Police Law is far more effective” and that the changes support the restoration agenda of Police Chief Listyo Sigit Prabowo, reinforcing Indonesia’s democratic governance and its target of a “golden era” by 2045.
