Indonesia's National Nutrition Agency (BGN) is implementing strict measures to ensure the safety of the Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) program following several food poisoning incidents. BGN Head Sudaryono has ordered that if any part of a meal package is deemed unfit, the entire package must be returned to the service unit for investigation. To prevent health risks, the agency has implemented a ‘Rules of 4 Hours’ policy, requiring meals to be consumed within four hours of preparation.

In response to recent safety concerns, the BGN has permanently closed 504 nutrition fulfillment service units (SPPG) due to sanitation failures and dismissed 137 unit heads following evaluations. The agency is also monitoring approximately 3,000 additional kitchens. To improve oversight, a dedicated email channel has been established for teachers to report issues directly to the BGN.

On the policy front, President Prabowo Subianto reaffirmed his commitment to continuing the MBG program to combat stunting, emphasizing the need for greater efficiency and improvement. Additionally, the Minister of Primary and Secondary Education announced that the MBG budget will be separated from the national education budget starting in 2028, following a Constitutional Court ruling.
