Indonesia strengthens protections for deaf online motorcycle taxi drivers

The Indonesian Coordinating Ministry for Community Empowerment (Kemenko PM) has partnered with Ruang Amal Indonesia and IFG Life to provide specialized support for deaf online motorcycle taxi (ojol) drivers. The initiative focuses on enhancing economic independence and safety through training in financial literacy, safe riding practices, and employment social security.

During an event in Jakarta, Deputy Dyah Tri Kumolosari emphasized that people with disabilities are a priority in Indonesia’s inclusive development goals, stating, “Disabilities are a priority, not an addition.” The program aims to ensure that drivers can work safely and access necessary social protections.

The training session involved approximately 60 deaf drivers from the Jabodetabek area, members of the Komunitas Ojol Tunarungu Relawan Indonesia (KOTRI). According to Slamet Tuharie, CEO of Ruang Amal Indonesia, there are roughly 1,300 deaf online motorcycle taxi drivers operating within the Jabodetabek region.
