Indonesia stunting prevention: Palembang reports decline as lawmakers urge focus on sanitation

Stunting rates in Palembang, Indonesia, have shown a downward trend, decreasing from 157 cases among toddlers in 2025 to 124 cases as of August 2026. To support this progress, the Palembang TP PKK has been distributing supplementary food packages to various health posts (posyandu) to strengthen nutritional intervention.

In a separate legislative discussion, the Chairperson of Commission IX of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI), Felly Estelita Runtuwene, emphasized that stunting prevention must go beyond numerical targets. She urged the government to prioritize fundamental needs, specifically access to clean water and proper sanitation. Runtuwene noted that inadequate sanitation and contaminated water sources remain significant obstacles to improving public health and effectively addressing stunting in various regions.
