Indonesia expands stunting prevention and nutrition programs
Overview
In June 2026, Mayor Benyamin Davnie of South Tangerang reaffirmed a dual-pillar stunting strategy, urging Ngider Sehat Premium teams and Posyandu cadres to conduct door-to-door visits to detect malnutrition during the first 1,000 days of life.
Efforts have since expanded through multi-sectoral partnerships. In South Kalimantan, the Jhonlin Group’s CSR program has provided milk, vitamins, and medical equipment to Posyandu facilities in Tanah Bumbu. In East Java, the regional police (Polda Jatim) partnered with the National Family Planning Agency (BKKBN) to mobilize 1,300 family-planning educators. Additionally, PKK delegations from Bulukumba have engaged in knowledge exchanges with Malang to refine food security practices.
By late August 2026, regional authorities intensified focus on data synchronization and community-level education. In Papua, Governor Matius D. Fakhiri and BKKBN representative Sarles Brabar emphasized resolving data discrepancies to better target high-priority areas. In East Jakarta, the government is strengthening the capacity of PKK cadres for neighborhood-level assistance.
In early September 2026, the National Nutrition Agency (BGN) announced plans to activate 2,700 nutrition fulfillment service units (SPPG) in underdeveloped, frontier, and outermost (3T) regions to expand the Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) program. Concurrently, the BKKBN is prioritizing nutritious meal distribution to pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, and toddlers across five provinces with high stunting rates, targeting over 7 million beneficiaries. However, officials noted challenges regarding the distribution of incentives for Family Assistance Teams (TPK).
Regional cooperation continues as leaders from Indragiri Hilir and Tanjung Jabung Barat met to exchange successful strategies for accelerating stunting reduction. Localized initiatives also persist, such as Kuningan Regency’s ‘Gerimis’ and ‘Gematel’ programs to increase animal protein consumption, and the NHM Peduli program’s work in mining-adjacent areas.
