Indonesia ramps up water supply measures amid El Nino drought

Local disaster agencies across Indonesia are urging residents to prepare for an El Nino‑driven dry season. The head of BPBD Ambon, Frits Tatipikalawan, called on people to protect trees, dispose of waste properly and conserve water. In Aceh, BPBA chief Ir Bahron BaktiST issued similar warnings, urging the public not to burn land and to follow BMKG alerts.

BMKG placed seven districts in West Nusa Tenggara under a drought‑alert, noting up to 74 consecutive rainless days in Bima. To address water shortages, Kemenkum NTB and Bank Mandiri delivered four water tanks holding 20,000 litres to the village of Tibu Lilin in Lombok Barat. DPR member F. Alimudin Kolatlena organized emergency water distribution for residents of Bula in Seram Bagian Timur.

In East Java, Perumdam Among Tirto secured a new spring at Bendo, capable of 8 L/s, to supply up to 800 households in Batu Selatan. BPBD Bekasi is pushing the construction of upstream dams in partnership with BBWS Citarum and BBWS Ciliwung‑Cisadane. At the national level, Public Works Minister Dody Hanggodo announced the activation of 10,789 boreholes and the optimisation of dams, embankments and reservoirs to safeguard water for households and agriculture during the drought.
