Indonesia targets 100% waste management by 2029

The Indonesian Ministry of Environment (KLH) has established a roadmap to achieve 100 percent waste management by 2029, in alignment with the 2025-2029 National Medium-Term Development Plan. The initiative includes updating regulations regarding producer responsibility for waste reduction.

Currently, Indonesia generates approximately 144,562 tons of waste per day. Officials report that only about 25 percent of this waste is managed, while 75 percent remains unmanaged. A significant portion of the country's 522 landfills still utilize open dumping methods, which results in roughly 35 to 36 percent of waste leaking into the environment.

The government's phased strategy includes strengthening governance and ending open dumping practices by 2026, followed by massive facility construction in 2027. To address land scarcity and the waste crisis in metropolitan areas, the government plans to implement environmentally friendly technologies, such as waste-to-energy facilities, to convert waste into renewable energy like electricity.
