Indonesia to launch commodity exchange and expand geothermal energy

Indonesia is advancing several strategic economic initiatives focused on commodity sovereignty and renewable energy. President Prabowo Subianto has announced the establishment of the Strategic Mineral and Commodities Exchange, scheduled to begin operations on January 1, 2027. The exchange aims to allow Indonesia to set its own benchmark prices for key exports such as nickel, coal, and palm oil, moving the nation from a price taker to a market maker. M. Sardjito has been proposed to lead this new institution.

In the energy sector, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia highlighted Indonesia's significant geothermal potential, estimated at 27 to 30 gigawatts. Currently, only about 11.6 percent of this potential is utilized. The government has set a target for geothermal energy to contribute 15 percent to the national energy mix by 2050 to support energy independence and the transition to cleaner power.

Additionally, the government is working to strengthen the national bullion ecosystem. The newly formed Indonesia Bullion Market Association (IBMA) aims to integrate gold industry players from upstream to downstream to enhance the country's competitiveness and support the monetary system.
