Indonesia accelerates AI and digital infrastructure to drive economic growth
Indonesia is aggressively pursuing a digital and AI-driven economic transformation to boost national productivity and competitiveness. Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto stated that AI could contribute significantly to the global economy, noting that Indonesia has seen strong commercial AI momentum in ASEAN, with AI-based feature revenues growing 127% year-on-year in the first half of 2025.
To support an 8 percent economic growth target, the government is focusing on building a robust digital architecture, including data centers, semiconductor supply chains, and digital twin technology. This strategy includes a commitment to training 600,000 professional digital talents annually. Additionally, the government is planning the establishment of the Indonesia International Financial Center (PFII) to attract global investment and compete with established hubs like Singapore and Dubai.
Parallel to economic goals, immigration authorities are enhancing oversight of foreign nationals using AI and drones. The “digital fence” program aims to monitor borders and high-traffic tourist areas like Bali to ensure national sovereignty and public security. Officials have warned that foreign nationals who disrupt local order or violate residency permits will face strict legal actions, including deportation.
