Indonesia electric vehicle industry expands through PEVS 2026 and new battery plants

The Periklindo Electric Vehicle Show (PEVS) 2026 officially opened in Jakarta, focusing on clean mobility and energy transformation. The event highlights the potential for electric vehicles (EVs) to reduce household energy costs and decrease national fuel subsidies. Industry leaders, including Periklindo Chairman Moeldoko, emphasized that EVs serve as a game changer for both technology and economic efficiency.

Simultaneously, Indonesia is strengthening its EV battery ecosystem. Minister of Downstreaming and Energy Transition Bahlil Lahadalia announced that a new battery plant, a joint venture between CATL and PT Aneka Tambang Tbk (Antam), is nearing inauguration by President Prabowo Subianto. This facility marks the third major battery plant in the country, joining operations by Hyundai and REPT Battero Indonesia, creating an integrated supply chain from mining to battery cell production.

In the commercial sector, companies like Mobil Anak Bangsa (MAB) and Wuling Motors are showcasing diverse EV portfolios at PEVS, ranging from logistics vehicles to passenger cars. Meanwhile, the Jakarta provincial government is collaborating with the University of Indonesia to study the management of hazardous waste from spent EV batteries to mitigate environmental risks.
