Indonesia targets E20 bioethanol fuel implementation by 2028

The Indonesian government aims to implement E20 gasoline, which contains a 20 percent bioethanol blend, by 2028. This policy is intended to reduce reliance on gasoline imports, support energy transformation in the transportation sector, improve air quality, and lower greenhouse gas emissions.

Eniya Listiani Dewi, Director General of New, Renewable Energy, and Energy Conservation, stated that the target follows directives from the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources. To meet the projected demand, which is expected to reach approximately 1.39 million kiloliters of bioethanol by 2028, the government is encouraging increased national production capacity and investment in bioethanol plants.

Currently, there are five bioethanol plants with a total production of about 70,500 kiloliters. To reach the 2028 goals, the government anticipates the need for an additional 15 plants by 2027 and roughly 20 more plants by 2028 to support nationwide E20 implementation.
