Indonesia targets E20 biofuel production within two years

President Prabowo Subianto has ordered the Indonesian government to begin producing E20 biofuel—a blend containing 20 percent ethanol—within the next two years. During a cabinet meeting in Jakarta, the President instructed relevant ministries to take concrete steps to meet this target, focusing on land availability and industrial infrastructure.

Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs Zulkifli Hasan stated that sugarcane has been selected as the primary feedstock for ethanol production, as it is considered more economically viable and easier to mechanize than corn or cassava. To support this initiative, the government plans to prepare approximately 2 million hectares of sugarcane plantations across Java, Sumatra, Kalimantan, and Papua.

The development of the necessary ethanol processing industry will be managed by Danantara. The program aims to achieve 100 percent domestic production to strengthen national energy independence, with long-term goals of eventually reaching an E50 ethanol blend.
