Indonesia targets EV ecosystem growth and battery waste management

Indonesia is positioning its electric vehicle (EV) industry as a primary pillar of national economic independence and a key driver toward achieving Net Zero Emissions by 2060. The government aims to build a comprehensive ecosystem that encompasses manufacturing, research, innovation, supply chain strengthening, mineral downstreaming, and the creation of high-quality green jobs.

To support this transition, the Ministry of Environment is working to establish an EV battery waste management ecosystem, with a target completion date by mid-next year. This initiative includes drafting regulations this year to manage hazardous battery waste. The plan involves utilizing official dealers and workshops as collection points for used batteries, where users may receive incentives for returning or exchanging old batteries.

The government is collaborating with various stakeholders, including the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN) and the Association of Indonesia Automotive Industries (GAIKINDO), to ensure the ecosystem is robust. Officials emphasized that the strategy must balance industrial growth with social involvement and strict occupational safety standards.
