Indonesia targets global modest fashion market expansion
Indonesia is intensifying efforts to expand its modest fashion industry into global markets. During the IN2MOTIONFEST x JMFW 2026 event in Jakarta, Minister of Trade Budi Santoso emphasized the government's commitment to strengthening the domestic market and driving exports through strategic partnerships.
To support exporters, the Ministry of Trade is utilizing its 46 international trade representative offices to facilitate digital business matching with foreign buyers. Domestically, the ministry is encouraging retail partnerships with the Indonesian Retailers and Shopping Center Tenants Association (HIPPINDO) to integrate national fashion products into department stores and malls.
The economic potential for this sector is substantial. According to Bank Indonesia Senior Deputy Governor Aida S. Budiman, global Muslim consumer spending is estimated at US$2.34 trillion, with approximately 20 percent directed toward modest fashion. Data from the State of the Global Islamic Economy Report 2024/2025 indicates that global spending on Muslim clothing and footwear reached US$326.95 billion in 2023 and is projected to rise significantly by 2028. Indonesia currently holds the top position in the modest fashion indicator for the 2024/2025 period.
