Indonesia Stock Exchange seeks MSCI clarification after market reclassification proposal

The Indonesia Stock Exchange (BEI) is seeking clarification from MSCI following the index provider's proposal to reclassify Indonesia's equity market from Emerging Market to Standalone Market. MSCI has initiated a public consultation period that will run until April 30, 2027, with a final decision expected by June 30, 2027.

MSCI cited concerns regarding market governance, including insufficient transparency in share ownership structures and suspected coordinated trading practices. The proposal has triggered significant volatility in the Indonesian market. On a recent trading session, the Jakarta Composite Index (IHSG) plunged as much as 11 percent, prompting the BEI to implement a 30-minute trading halt to maintain orderly market conditions.

In response, BEI President Director Jeffrey Hendrik stated that the exchange, alongside the Financial Services Authority (OJK), has implemented various reforms to improve transparency and market integrity. BEI intends to present concrete evidence of these improvements to MSCI to address their concerns. Meanwhile, some market participants, including Danantara CEO Rosan Roeslani, have viewed the market correction as a long-term investment opportunity due to attractive valuations.
