Badan Gizi Nasional updates MBG program and suspends 91 service units

The National Nutrition Agency (BGN) is implementing several updates and facing challenges within its Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) program. To improve food quality and reduce spoilage risks, BGN is testing a buffet-style service system. The agency aims to expand this buffet model to 5,000 nutrition service units (SPPG) by the end of 2026.

However, the program faces operational and financial hurdles. BGN has suspended 91 nutrition service units because they failed to return approximately Rp 18 billion in state funds following an audit by the Audit Board of Indonesia (BPK). Additionally, food distribution has reportedly halted for 2,791 beneficiaries in Sukodadi, Lamongan, causing concerns among students.

In terms of nutrition, BGN reports that protein consumption among children has increased from roughly 30-40% to nearly 80% due to the program. BGN also announced that starting November 1, MBG kitchens are permitted to provide milk, with 80% of the supply required to come from local farmers. To ensure accuracy in distribution, BGN has urged schools to synchronize student data with the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education systems.
